To reflect changing global perspectives, Tate seeks to develop its international role and presence. We aim to lead in collecting and showing art from as wide a geographical reach as possible, deepen knowledge through international research and be a hub for a global community of artists.
The International Fellowship Programme enables an emerging talent from Tate to embark on an international research project. The Fellow receives a residency to explore a key museal research project of their interest and of strategic importance to Tate, with special access to a host institution for a six-week period.
In 2025, the Fellowship took place in Hong Kong, hosted by M+, Asia’s global museum of contemporary visual culture.
The Tate International Research Fellowship is made possible with philanthropic support.
2025 International Research Fellow
The 2025 Fellow was Vasundhara Mathur. Vasundhara was hosted by M+ for 6 weeks in November-December 2025.
Vasundhara’s work as a researcher centres transnational histories and practices of placemaking, collective dreaming, archiving, artists working with/responding to archives, memory and the role of artists and organisers in social movements.
In May 2024, as research lead for AHRC funded project Our Heritage Our Stories, Vasundhara curated a public programme at Tate, titled The Archive is a Gathering Place. The programme included workshops, performances, displays, talks and a publication exploring the archive as a place for collaboration, creativity and political practice. Tate Papers no. 36 provides a record of the talks, panel discussions and performances at the symposium and festival.
